Top Ten Animated Movies

By: Biplob Kishore Deb

Animation has been a new dimension in the Movies and the animated movies can easily attract children and also adults. Having seen the growing popularity of the animated movies, new section for best animated movie was introduced from 2002 in the Academy Awards. I found ten most popular animated movies which have been succeeded financially.

If you find something to have been included in this article then please let me know in the comment section.

The Lion King

The Lion King is one of the greatest productions of Walt Disney Pictures and the highest-grossing animated film of all time in the USA. Its initial earning was $312.8 million. The film was released in 1994. The estimated budget of this film is $79,300,000. The story was not something exceptional but the implementation of the story in the life of the wild animals deserves credit. The story was based on the kingdom of Pride lands in Africa. The king of this kingdom is named Mufasa, a lion, where lions rule over other animals. The central character of this film is King Mufasa’s young child Simba who would be the next king of the pride land. Scar, the brother of the king Mufasa, fells jealous of it. So, he starts making plan to kill both the king and his son to clear the way of his being the next king. He then kills the king strategically but Simba can be able to flee from the kingdom. Scar makes a lame excuse that Simba is responsible for his father’s death. Later Simba could regain the throne after some battle with Scar. Here, in this film one thing for which film makers should be credited is the implementation of the real life of wild animals and to do this, film makers went to notice the proper habitat of the animals. In this movie wild characters were made in a 3D computer program. Cell Shades of the characters make the appearance of a drawn animation. This film was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. The producer is Don Hahn. In this movie all of the background voices of the animated characters were highly features movie stars including Matthew Broderick for adult Simba, Jonathan Taylor Thomas for child Simba, James Earl Jones for Mufasa. The song of this film ‘Circle of Life’ became very popular in that time. Elton John composed the songs and Tim Rice gave the vocal in the songs. This film was re-released in the giant-screen in the IMAX format in 2002.

In that time a human child enters in their city who is called Boom by Sully and Mike. Later, Monsters with the help of Boom find the newest way of energy making where they make children happy which resulted the laughter of the children. This list is weak. Where is Grave of the Fireflies? Akira? Anything besides Disney or Disney-ish?

It should be no surprise that everything on the list is "Disney or Disney-ish;" this is based on how much money the things have made! Do you really think Grave of the Fireflies has made anywhere near as much money as The Lion King?

I'm no fan of animated films but this list is powerfully weak. Its a list of the most financially sucessful films, not the best.

Just because disney sets up very profitable promotions with Burger King and action figures does not a good movie make.

As for the list? I've ssen better animation fly out of my ass than on Disney movie screens. Disney is a rapist of any story it can pillage. Best animated movies? Nah. But highest grossing? Yeah, probably.

Quote - "Animation has been a new dimension in the Movies..."

This first sentence told me immediately that this list would be suspect. Animation is definitely NOT a new dimension in cinema. Popeye? Felix the cat? Betty Boop? Old, old, old Mickey Mouse? Not new at all.

Disney animation is trash. It may have been revolutionary in the '30's, or whatever if you want to make that argument. However, Disney fell way behind when they were more concerned with how much money they were making (as this list) then cinematic quality. I would not rate any of these films as the best anything (except maybe waste of time, money-makers, etc...). I suggest you watch non-Disney animated films before compiling a list of the 10 ten animated movies, since there is much, much more out there.

Even when limited to Disney-ish films this list is wrong. Adjusting for inflation, Fantasia's box office return beats Lion King by a wide margin. It's 3rd to Snow White and 101 Dalmations.

Plus, it's better animation than all of the Pixar crap.

Also, how can you list Shrek but not Shrek 2?

Most of those are of course less than 10 years old, as in any top 10 list.

Furthermore, Ice Age was an hour of drivel with 15 minutes of a funny squirrel spliced in.

The Incredibles was a better movie than most listed here, yet it is absent.
Toy Story 2 was fun, but a sequel is a sequel.

No one has taken into account inflation here, which would have put Snow White at the top of the list easily. $137 million in 1937 translates into roughly $1.4 billion in 1994 which beats out Lion King by triple.

Now I love anime, but Grave of the Fireflies would definitely NOT be one of the top ten animated films of all-time. Especially considering the uber-pessimistic message of how war destroys everything from life to family to culture, it was lacking, and not just in entertainment value. A cautionary tale based on historic facts? Yes. Awesome animated movie? No.

Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away? Both great movies, and sadly not mentioned. But if you're going to claim Akira as one of the best animated movies of all time, you've got to consider Snow White too. What makes them both great was that they were ground-breaking for their time. Just because one comes from Japan and the other from the US doesn't change that fact.

Still the Best animated movie ever was "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within". Released in 2001 by Columbia Pictures (Shrek & Monsters Inc. were released the same year.) They were years ahead of the pack with CGI. The individual hair strands, imperfections on the skin, and veins. Almost made you believe you were watching a human movie. By today standards this movie would be seen as a great animation movie with perfect CGI.

    Just one guy speaking out.

I hate it when people just group anime all into the same generic categorie. Anime simply put, means animation made in Japan. Yes there are some good Disney movies etc and there are alot of bad ones. But when you say you dont like anime thats just stupid because anime is not a genre.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anonymous2:12 PM

    Very Pixar/Disney/Hollywood-centric.

There are many animated films produced worldwide, that rival and surpass these films (and IMO the amount of $ they made or didn't make is not necessarily a factor in their quality...).

Best animated film I've seen is Studio Ghibli's "Ocean Waves" (Umi ga kikoeru), there IMO we have (human) characters (and not talking deer or cognisant lions)actually behaving and acting like real-life people, with lush photorealistic hand-animated scenes...

A close second is "Steam Boy".

(Maybe this list should be re-titled by the author as "best animated films I happen to have seen" ... ?)

Did these people know that Disney didn't make every animated film ever? Hell, he practically enslaved his animators... All Disney did was take awesome fairy tales, water them down so nobody would be offended, or is that interested, and shove it down peoples throats until the true morals of the stories were lost. If you look anywhere else for competition, look to japan. Thats why disney bought up all the rights to Studio Ghibli's" movies. even in a completely different culture, they are still better than the crp here...

is michael eisner paying you off to write this list?
other than snow white and the 7 dwarves disneys ONLY other great animated accomplishment was Beauty and the Beast
so without further ado here is a proper top 10 list

    10. Snow White and the 7 Dwarves: disney pioneered moving backgrouns by painting scenes on sliding glass panels in order to better convey motion and depth

    9. Shrek: cgi to be sure but it proved that animation can be for kids as well as adults

    8. Iron Giant: a warner brothers masterpiece

7.Beauty and the Beast: Disney begins to integrate 3d and traditional cel animation

    6. Ninja Scroll: the story may not be terribly deep but the character design has been the best ive seen thus far

    5. Steamboat Willie: Disney brings animation into the spotlight

    4. Lord of the Rings: an entirely rotoscoped animated movie. pity they never finished the series

    3. Grave of the Fireflies: Studio Ghibli sets the bar for themselves on this one storywise and animation wise

    2. Ghost in the Shell: animation techniques and execution that has yet to be rivaled by any otehr studio.

    1. Akira: the one who managed to set the standard for animated films. its still called the best animated movie of all time and for good reason.

Dude, you should seriously check these out.

The lack of *anything* by Studio Ghibli makes this list completely unacceptable, and it's a shame as many people are probably reading this and taking you up on your opinion - Which is 100% completely ignorant of anything done in Japan. So you know what, I'm going to plug a few of them here because they're honestly some of the best movies I've ever seen in my life, animated or not. Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata are two of the best animation directors of all time and their work being ignored like this is truly a tragedy.
    - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
    - My Neighbor Totoro
    - Spirited Away
    - Howl's Moving Castle
    - Kiki's Delivery Service
    - Princess Mononoke
    - And the well-mentioned Grave of the Fireflies.

The list is pretty weak - SHREK has some funny lines but and as an animated film or film - pretty weak. It also looks like something someone did on a Commodore. You really need to go back and start in the 1930's and really watch more than 15 animated films before deciding on 10 - unless you're 9 years old, then you're okay.

  66. Anonymous4:37 PM

Ok so the facts are a little off and it's obviously a little dangerous in this day and age to make a "top ten" list without a
"personal opinion" disclaimer because you're sure to piss of someone somewhere. I'd like to commend the author of this article for his fairly good use of the english language in light of the fact that it is not his first language. I took french until Gr.10 and the things I wrote in french sucked big time, whereas this is a fairly articulate, though factually incorrect at times, post. So once again I say good job, pay a bit more attention to your sources, and locate/download a spell checker. ;)

On the plus side. Boy you sure got a lot of attention and discussion. For an interesting follow up post you could make a list of the Top Ten Animated Movies as mentioned by the comments from this post.

how about listing a movie that didn't have a burger king toy?

anything by studio ghibli is better than any of those over exposed and over rated movies.

    simplistic.

why bother posting this crap? its like reading an advertisement.

    crap post...

you have no idea of what the world of animated films contains beyond your narrow mainstream experience. go watch every film by miyazaki, every film by otomo and then come back and strike yourself close fisted in the face a few times.

    IRON GIANT

Iron Giant should have been on that woefully inadequate list.

The greatest Old Disney movie is Pinnochio, not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The latter deserves credit for being the first feature-length animated movie, and thus starting the ball rolling, and it was pretty darn good for the time. But Pinnochio beats it up, down, and sideways in terms of actual quality of story, animation, voice talent, and songs (“When You Wish Upon a Star” beats “Heigh-Ho” any day of the week).

The Iron Giant is the very best animated movie ever made in America that doesn’t have the name “Disney” on it, and better than most Disney movies. I’d say that only Pinnochio and maybe Aladdin beat it.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm should also have been included. While Batman Returns proved for the first time ever that it is possible to make a darn good live-action Batman movie (all that preceeded it were mediocre [the two Tim Burton films and the classic Adam West / Burt Ward Batman movie based on the TV series] to downright abyssmal [the two Joel Schumacher flicks]), Mask of the Phantasm has more of what a Batman movie should be in any five minutes of it than all four Burton and Schumacher films in their entirety combined! I’d put Batman Returns as about ½ to maybe ¾ as good as Mask of the Phantasm. It unfortunately flopped at the box office because WB steeyyuuupidly marketed it as a “kids movie.”

And yes, Studio Ghibli deserved at least three of the Top Ten, while The Lion King deserves the #1 spot only on a list of Most Blatant Plagiarized Rip-Off Animated Movies of All Time.

Frankly, though, the credibility of this list (or total lack thereof) was revealed when the writer thought that the little girl’s name in Monsters, Inc. was “Boom.” Hehhehhehheh. Oh, yeah. Buddy, if you ever go in for brain surgery, beware if the surgeon asks for a “scapple.” Or, if you want to invest for your retirement, beware of an investment councillor that wants you to invest in a “monkey market fund” or in “spocks and bones.” That’s basically what you just did, credibility-wise.

  82. You don't even get the details right. The Lion King was 3D? Whaaa? No it wasn't. It was a hand drawn film. There were a few 3D elements tossed in during ONE scene, but other than that, the whole film was hand drawn. Your blog reads like a Wikipedia re-write.

Finding Nemo was THE highest grossing animated movie in the U.S. EVER and didn't make this list...

I guess Final Fantasy wasn't produced by Disney and therefore doesn't qualify.

Stop smoking crack - it is making you stupid.

Also, you seem to have a problem with sentence structure. Not to mention your knowledge is awfully limited, with many anime films surpassing U.S. ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Anonymous8:55 PM

Ok first of all, while the list does completely suck, I would not say that none of those films belong on there. The Lion King is an excellent piece of work, and Toy Story was one of the pieces that started a genre. So before you go crying about Disney and listing off all the anime movies to ever make it big in the states. Think a second please

Let's leave the grammar alone. Apart from some typos, it's perfectly understandable - and a good deal better than many native speakers. It's probably even better than my wonky grammar.

However, I second the idea that you make a follow-up post with the movies people have suggested here. I personally would recommend at least looking over some Studio Ghibli films like many have suggested (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of the Fireflies, etc.) and including them in your list. While many of the films already on the list are deserving of the (rather vague) title of great animated film, I think, like many others here, that the list reflects only the top selling ones rather than the greatest ones.

    Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I love the fact that everyone is up in arms about there only being American movies, so they only list Japanese movies? What about French movies like Triplettes de Belleville or Fantastic Planet? Or Austrlian films like The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello?

How verry japanophile of you all...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Anonymous10:55 PM

SEE MORE ANIMATED MOVIES! This list is very impotent.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Anonymous10:57 PM

Benza don't be dumb. "Japanophile" or not, said French or Austrailian movies arn't very well known, by word of mouth or otherwise. The reason so many people have rounded things like Akira, and Princess Monoke ((and any other studio ghibli for that matter) are absolutely wonderful pieces of work that not only are amazingly animated and directed, but some (Akira) rival even the BEST of live-action movies.

All the movies listed were made to be marketed to children why things like Akira and Grave of the Fireflies are movies that are of an animated medium that are not for children.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Anonymous11:28 PM

Although a great movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" really should be its own category since it was both live and animated.

You might be able to pass this list off as the "Top Ten Animated Movies by Large American Studios," but it's a joke with its current title.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Anonymous4:12 AM

You seem to be lacking Spirited Away, Steamboy, Tripletts of Bellview...

Or Roger Rabbit. How dare you leave that out.

Only some of your Disney films can be considered but Bugs Life? Come on.

As someone said above, this list is mistitled. It should read top 10: Money earning animated or top 10 American animated or top 10 CHILDRENS animated movies.

This list takes things such as "Seminal" or "Most Artistic"
    and ignoresthem completely.

SO get a clue, oh great writer, get a clue.

I nth the suggestion of The Iron Giant. Very good and very overlooked film. Others I'd nominate are The Nightmare Before Christmas and Waking Life (a unique movie that pushed the envelope of rotoscopy). I never got into anime, but Akira is a great film as well.

  106. Ok, some people are made to write and they grow up (barely) and become movie reviewers and such. Others start a blog and hope desperately that people will agree with what they're saying. They both SHOULD have one thing in common...they should RESEARCH their info BEFORE they blog it ;)

I'm sure we could ALL name a dozen or so animated movies that the writer never even considered, that alone should show you the validity of it all.

Don't sweat it too much people, this is back water, wanna be, self opinion stuff. We could all have our own lists to write.

should be named "10 most popular" rather than overall top 10

There's are things, like Akira, that aren't as mainstream but are landmarks in animation. As far as American animation goes, Don Bluth made some movies with better stories and much more beautiful art (The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, All Dogs go to Heaven) than any of the movies listed... pity his production company got squashed by The Little Mermaid in the late 80s

You guys are so obsessed with Disney and Japan that, unless ive missed something, youve all have totally overlooked Wallace and Gromit and Wil Vinton. Also, even though its live action, would Jim Henson's movies be considered animated? Eh, probably not, but 'The Dark Crystal' is one of the most amazing artistic endeavours ever (along with Fantasia).

But yeah...this list really looks like it was written by a Disney shareholer.

Yeah, Grave of Fireflies, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Ghost in the Shell wasn't bad, Akira was okay (awesome for its time), etc. I understand if you're shooting for a children's audience thing, but at least two or three of my suggestions hail from overseas and kick the arse of some of the ones on THIS list.
